Good all purpose home use. Still printing fine.Black and Color ink together cost $40 to $50 and uses up ink pretty fast printing photos. Reasonable price. Easy setup. Decent print quality.
This is a major turn-off for me. HP just wants to force users to buy new printers. Why. I have used this printer for over a year. This did not happen with the HP 960cse.(---) When I moved to Vista, I had to buy this printer and discard my 960cse. Now that I moved to Windows 7, the drivers exists for this 6988 but the software is not updated.
So I can't check ink level or tell the printer to calibrate itself. Here are my thoughts:(++) lots of printing control and features(+) prints every document I need. This happens rarely but still it is very annoying. Because whenever Microsoft releases a new operating system, HP seems to refuse to update their printer software and driver. Not so sure about photographs since I don't print those: cheaper to get high quality photo prints done at Costco or some online site.(+) good price(+) accepts legal size paper(0) allows duplex printing but only with semi-expensive add-on unit.(0) like all inkjets at this price level, it is noisy(0) one area of the page likes to smear; I believe this was caused by a defective ink cartridge(0) the default setting causes the printer to wait forever before printing on the other side of a sheet of paper effectively reducing it to 3 or 4 pages per minute at "Fast Normal".(-) this printer jams up significantly more often than my old HP 960cse inkjet which also had a duplex unit.(--) sometimes the feeder takes in 2 sheets of paper at the same time especially in "Fast Draft". I also purchased the duplex unit and almost always print double-sided.
I only use HP inkjet paper so I can't see why it would malfunction. Without the printing software and driver, I was forced to use the generic HP driver and got extremely inferior printing and no control over the printer.
I am very pleased with this printer. It has a good print quality and is easy to use.
Everything looks fuzzy. Nothing is crisp. but it took forever to get it to work in the first place, and I don't wanna go through the insanity again. I have a relatively new Intel Mac (OSX 10.5.8) and the print quality from this thing is abysmal. It's light and very blurry, making any medium-sized text practically unreadable. All the good reviews here seem to be from people with PCs, so I thought I'd speak up for the benefit of Mac users.Debating whether to return this thing.
The printer does a great job of printing, but it takes way too long for the print to be accepted from the computer. You have to wait half a minute or longer to know if your print job is actually going to print
